Does Moonshine Go Bad? How Long It Lasts & How to Store It
Clear moonshine doesn’t go bad. There’s too much alcohol in it for anything to grow, so the bottle someone tucked behind the canned goods three Christmases ago is still perfectly drinkable. Flavored moonshine stays safe just as long, but taste is another story. Once you open it, the fruit and sugar start to dull, and after a few months it won’t taste the way it did that first night.
We make both at McLaughlin Distillery in Sewickley, and “does moonshine go bad?” might be the question we hear most at the tasting bar, right behind “which one’s the strongest?” So we wrote the longer answer down.
Does Moonshine Go Bad or Expire? The Quick Answer by Type
Most moonshine doesn’t have an expiration date printed anywhere, ours included, no matter how many times you turn the bottle around looking for one. That’s on purpose. What went into it tells you far more than the date it was filled.
| Type | Unopened | After opening | Fridge? |
| Clear moonshine | Keeps for years | Still good for years with a tight cap | Not needed |
| Flavored moonshine | Keeps for years, flavor softens slowly | Tastes best within a few months | Helps the fruit last |
| Cream-style spirits | Follow the label | Shorter window, follow the label | Yes, once opened |
Nothing on that list turns into something unsafe. Most people typing does moonshine expire into their phone want to know if the half-finished bottle from last Thanksgiving still tastes right. That depends on what’s in it and where it’s been sitting since.
How Long Is Moonshine Good For Unopened?
Clear moonshine, sealed, will last for years. No sugar, lots of alcohol, nothing for bacteria or mold to eat. Our Squatch Shine goes into the bottle at 140 proof. A sealed one would probably still be fine long after the label has faded.
Flavored moonshine keeps for years unopened too, provided it lives somewhere cool and dark. Flavor is what drifts. Real peaches and cherries don’t hang on the way corn spirit does, so a bottle that spent two summers next to a sunny kitchen window might open up a little softer than you remember, even with the seal untouched.
How Long Does Moonshine Last Once Opened?
Every time you pour, a little air sneaks in behind it. Air is what slowly changes a spirit, though some bottles care a lot more than others.
Clear Moonshine
Hardly at all. Keep the cap tight and an opened bottle of clear moonshine will taste the same next year as it does today. Leave the lid sitting loose on top for a few months and you’ll lose some alcohol to the air, and the nose goes a bit dull. That’s about the worst of it.
Flavored Moonshine
Flavored bottles are the ones that change. Most opened flavored moonshine is at its best for the first few months. After that the fruit goes quiet and the sugar starts to sit heavier, a little syrupy. Still fine to drink, just less lively. Our peach moonshine is a good example. It goes down easier than anything else we make, and the peach is brightest when the bottle’s fresh, so don’t save it for an occasion that keeps getting pushed back. Open it and enjoy it.
Cream-Style Spirits and Liqueurs
Real cream shortens the clock. Dairy doesn’t hold up the way straight spirit does, so these bottles have the least time to play with after opening. Check what the label says, keep it in the fridge after the first pour, and don’t plan on it lasting till next Christmas.
Does Moonshine Need to Be Refrigerated?
For clear moonshine, no. The pantry is fine, and the fridge just makes it colder. Flavored moonshine doesn’t strictly need it either, but an opened bottle holds onto its fruit longer when it’s kept cold, and a lot of people like it better that way, especially on a hot July afternoon. Cream-based bottles are different. Once they’re opened, they live in the fridge.
And moonshine doesn’t go bad in the fridge, in case you were wondering. Cold slows everything down. Keep the cap tight, though, or it’ll start picking up whatever smells are drifting around in there.
Does Moonshine Freeze?
Not usually. Proof is what decides it. At 80 proof, a spirit won’t freeze until it’s colder than about 17 below zero Fahrenheit, and your kitchen freezer probably hovers somewhere near zero. Clear moonshine just comes out thick and painfully cold, which is exactly how some folks like to sip it.
Lower-proof bottles are another matter. A lot of flavored moonshine is bottled well under 80 proof, and the lower the number, the more likely it is to go slushy overnight, or freeze solid in a deep chest freezer in the basement. It’ll thaw out okay, but the texture may not come all the way back. Cream bottles should stay out of the freezer entirely. Cream will split in there, and once it does, shaking the bottle won’t fix it.
How to Store Moonshine So It Stays Fresh
Nothing fancy required. A kitchen cabinet or the pantry is perfect. A sunny windowsill isn’t, and neither is the top of the fridge (it runs warmer up there than you’d think), the garage in August or the back seat of your car. Stand bottles upright. Laid on its side for a long time, high-proof spirit will slowly chew through a cork or the liner inside a cap. And twist the lid all the way down after you pour, not halfway.
We’d always pick glass over plastic. Plastic can give moonshine a strange taste over time, especially in a warm room, while a mason jar is fine as long as the lid seals. And if you’re down to the last couple of ounces, finish them. A bottle that’s mostly air loses its flavor a lot faster than a full one.
How to Tell If Your Moonshine Has Gone Bad
Clear moonshine pretty much never spoils. With an old flavored or cream bottle, though, take ten seconds and look at it before you pour. If clear moonshine has gone cloudy, if there’s fuzz growing on the fruit in the jar, or if the cream has separated and stays separated no matter how hard you shake it, pour it down the sink. Then smell it. Sour, musty or anything like spoiled milk, same thing. A bottle can look fine, smell fine and still taste kind of flat. That’s not spoilage. It’s just old.
Cream liqueurs are the ones to watch closest. Grab a Sharpie and write the date on the label the day you open one of your cream liqueurs. Three months later you won’t remember, trust us.
Is Moonshine Okay to Drink? Store-Bought vs. Homemade
If it came off a licensed still, moonshine is no riskier than the bourbon or vodka sitting next to it at the liquor store. Every licensed distiller pulls off the first part of each run, the heads, and sets it aside, because that’s where the harsh stuff ends up. The stills are built for the job, and the whole operation answers to federal and state regulators.
The moonshine horror stories you’ve heard came out of illegal stills. Nobody was checking anything. People cobbled stills together out of whatever they had, cut corners on the run, and some even used old car radiators, which could leach lead right into the liquor. Bought from a licensed maker, moonshine is okay to drink, plain and simple. From an unlicensed backyard setup, we’d pass. Distilling at home without a federal permit is illegal anyway.
Fresh Moonshine From McLaughlin Distillery
Up in Sewickley Hills, we make moonshine in small batches with real fruit, real sugar and a corn base we distill ourselves. There are 22 flavors on the shelf right now. That’s a lot of bottles to keep fresh, which is part of why our storage advice is so simple: buy the ones you’re excited about, open them, and drink them while they still taste like they should.
Enjoy Your Moonshine While It’s at Its Best
Can moonshine go bad? The clear stuff, almost never. Flavored stays safe but peaks in the first few months after you open it, and cream bottles want the fridge and a shorter deadline. A dark cabinet and a tight lid handle most of the rest. If you’d rather taste a few flavors before choosing, come out to Sewickley for a moonshine tasting near Pittsburgh, or give McLaughlin Distillery a call at 412-737-1840 or email info@mclaughlindistillery.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some commonly asked questions to consider:
Does store-bought moonshine like Ole Smoky go bad or expire?
It works the same way ours does. Clear bottles keep for years. Flavored and cream ones lose some of their punch after opening. Whatever the label tells you to do, go with that.
Does apple pie moonshine need to be refrigerated?
Not while it’s sealed. Once it’s open, we’d stick it in the fridge. The cinnamon stays brighter that way, and apple pie moonshine poured cold on a fall night is tough to beat.
What should you do with the fruit left in a moonshine jar?
Eat it, just go slow. That fruit has been soaking in spirit and it’s stronger than it looks. It’s good spooned over vanilla ice cream or dropped into a drink. If the jar’s been open for months, or the fruit has turned mushy or moldy, toss it.
